Moroccan Culture

In spite of being only an hour away from Spain, Morocco is very much unlike Europe. Over 40 years of French and Spanish colonial rule however has contributed to a rich and diverse culture.

Although the country is ethnically diverse, Morocco is generally considered to be an Arab nation. The Islamic faith is the majority amongst the Moroccan people and therefore coffee shops are popular and bars rare.

Whilst the country is governed ultimately by the monarch, Morocco is undergoing social and economic liberalisation under King Mohammed VI, foreign investment is growing as a result.

Arts and crafts are deeply embedded within Moroccan culture, from carpets to pottery, and from jewellery to woodwork. Music is central to many aspects of Moroccan life.

Government & Foreign Relations

Morocco is governed by a Constitutional Monarchy and Parliament where ultimate authority lies with the King. The country is divided into a number of primary administrative regions each of which is governed by a Walis who is appointed by the King.

Morocco is described as a moderate Arab state, maintains good relations with Europe and the United States and is a UN Member.
